Standby generators for hurricane season

A hurricane or tropical storm can leave neighborhoods across Central Florida without power for long stretches, and the heat and humidity make an outage hard to live through. A whole-home standby generator sits on a pad outside, runs on natural gas or propane, and starts by itself when the power drops. An automatic transfer switch moves your house onto the generator and back again when utility power returns, with no cords to run and no gas cans to refill.

Sizing comes down to what you want running. Some owners want the whole house, central AC included. Others choose the essentials: refrigerator, well pump, lights, garage door, internet, a bedroom or two and any medical equipment. We walk the house with you, list the circuits that matter, check the panel, and match the generator and transfer switch to that list. The same visit settles where the unit can sit, how the fuel will reach it and how the wiring will run.

Book well before a storm is named. A standby generator needs a permit and an inspection, and those take time to line up.

What electrical installation costs

These figures come from completed home electrical installs between January 2023 and October 2026: the range is the middle half of jobs and the typical price is the median. The second row counts every electrical install, from small jobs through panels and generator hookups, so its range runs wider. A whole-home standby generator gets its own estimate after a site visit, because the unit size, fuel supply and transfer switch set the cost.

JobTypicalMost paidJobs
Home electrical installs: new circuits, fixtures, fans and small upgrades$945$553 to $1,160248
All electrical installs, including panel and generator hookups$843$400 to $2,196338

These are what our customers actually paid for completed jobs from January 2023 to October 2026. Your exact price is quoted before any work starts.

Portable generator hookups: inlet and interlock

If you already own a portable generator, a proper hookup is a much smaller project than a standby system. We mount a weatherproof power inlet on an outside wall and fit an interlock kit or a manual transfer switch at the panel. In an outage you run one cord from the generator to the inlet, turn off the main breaker, and switch on the circuits you choose. The interlock makes it physically impossible to have the main breaker and the generator breaker on together.

Never feed a generator into a wall or dryer outlet with a cord that has plugs on both ends. It sends power back up the utility lines, where it can electrocute a line worker or a neighbor, and it can burn out your own wiring when power is restored. Keep any portable generator outside and well away from windows, doors and the garage, because its exhaust carries carbon monoxide.

Level 2 EV chargers at home

A Level 2 charger runs on a dedicated 240-volt circuit and fills a battery far faster than an ordinary household outlet. It usually goes in the garage or on the outside wall closest to where you park. Before we quote, we do a load calculation: your AC, water heater, range, dryer and pool pump already draw heavily, and a charger adds a long, steady load on top of them.

When the panel has room, the job is a new breaker, the wire run, and either a hardwired charger or a heavy-duty receptacle for a plug-in unit. When it does not, you still have choices: a lower charging rate, a load-management device that pauses charging while the house is busy, or a panel or service upgrade. You will know which one fits before any work starts.

New circuits, pools and spas

New appliances often need a circuit of their own: a second refrigerator or freezer in the garage, a bigger water heater, a range moved during a kitchen remodel, a workshop, or an outdoor kitchen. We size the wire and breaker to the appliance's nameplate and install the receptacle or disconnect it calls for. If you are adding a ductless unit for a garage or sunroom, our heat pump and mini-split team handles the equipment and we run the power.

In our job records since 2023, pool and spa equipment and electrical panels come up more often than any other electrical work. A new pool or spa needs circuits for the pump, heater or pool heat pump, lights and automation, GFCI protection where code requires it, and a disconnect near the equipment. Bonding matters just as much: the pool steel, the water, the pump motor, the heater, ladders, rails and nearby metal are joined with a bonding conductor so a swimmer is never caught between two voltages. We install it and leave it ready for the inspector.

Ceiling fans, lighting and surge protection

Ceiling fans earn their keep in a Florida summer. Putting a fan where a light hangs usually means replacing the ceiling box with one rated for a fan, because an ordinary light box can work loose under a fan's weight and motion. Where there is no separate switch for the fan, we can run new wire or fit a remote or wall control. We also install recessed lights, under-cabinet lights, porch and soffit fixtures, and motion lights over the driveway.

Summer afternoons here bring frequent lightning, and a nearby strike or a surge on the utility lines can ruin an AC control board, a pool controller, a refrigerator or a TV in an instant. A whole-home surge protector mounts at the panel and clamps large surges before they reach your circuits. Pair it with plug-in surge strips at TVs and computers. No device can stop a direct strike, but layered protection handles the surges that arrive on the power lines.

Permits, inspection and paying for the project

Generators, EV chargers, new circuits, pool wiring and service changes generally need a permit. A licensed electrician pulls it, does the work to code, and meets the city or county inspector for the final. Ask about the manufacturer and labor warranty on your estimate. If any circuit, old or new, gives off a burning smell, sparks, makes an outlet or the panel hot, or trips a breaker that will not reset, turn it off and call (386) 668-8651 right away.

Prices are flat-rate and agreed before work starts. Larger projects can be financed through Service Finance Company or Synchrony, from $500 to $75,000 with no down payment required, subject to credit approval. One plan offers 6 months with no interest and no payments on any project; the rest are on our financing and rebates page.

Questions customers ask

What size standby generator does my house need?

It depends on what you want to run during an outage. Covering the whole house, central AC included, takes a much larger unit than covering the refrigerator, lights, well pump, internet and a few outlets. We go through your panel, ask which circuits you cannot do without, and size the generator and transfer switch to that list. The estimate shows the unit, the switch and the wiring so you can compare choices.

Can I plug my portable generator into a dryer outlet?

No. A cord with plugs on both ends backfeeds power into the utility lines, which can electrocute a line worker or a neighbor, and it can damage your own wiring when the grid comes back. The safe setup is a power inlet on the outside wall and an interlock or transfer switch at the panel, so the generator and the utility can never be connected to your house at the same time.

Does my panel have room for an EV charger?

We find out before we quote. A Level 2 charger pulls a steady load for hours on a 240-volt circuit, on top of your AC, water heater, dryer and pool pump. A load calculation and a look for open breaker spaces answer the question. If the panel comes up short, the choices are a lower charging rate, a load-management device that pauses charging, or a panel or service upgrade.

Should my EV charger be hardwired or plugged in?

Either can work. A plug-in charger needs a heavy-duty 240-volt receptacle rated for the charger and the steady load it pulls, and you can take the charger with you if you move. A hardwired charger connects straight to its own circuit, has no plug to wear or overheat, and can often charge at a higher rate. Your charger's instructions and your panel capacity decide which we recommend.

Do I need a permit to add a circuit or install a generator?

In most cases, yes. New circuits, generators, transfer switches, EV chargers and pool wiring generally need a permit and a final inspection by the county or city. A licensed electrician from ACE pulls the permit, does the work to code and meets the inspector. Unpermitted work can cause trouble with an insurance claim or when you sell the house, so it is worth doing properly.

Will a whole-home surge protector stop lightning damage?

It helps, but no device can promise full protection. A surge protector at the panel catches large surges that come in on the power lines from nearby strikes and utility switching, which protects the AC, pool equipment and appliances. A direct strike on the house can overwhelm any device. For better protection, add plug-in surge strips at TVs and computers and make sure your grounding is sound.

Can you put a ceiling fan where I have a light now?

Usually, yes. The light's ceiling box often has to be swapped for a fan-rated box, because a fan is heavier and moves, and an ordinary box can loosen over time. If the room has a single wall switch, we can add a second switched wire so the fan and light work separately, or use a remote or wall control. On a high or sloped ceiling we fit a downrod and an angled mount.
